How to Calculate Business Days

A business day is any day from Monday to Friday. To count business days between two dates, start with the calendar days in the range - both the start date and the end date are counted - then subtract the Saturdays and Sundays, then subtract any holiday dates that fall on a weekday. For example, Thursday 1 October 2026 to Wednesday 7 October 2026 is 7 calendar days minus 2 weekend days minus 0 holidays = 5 business days. See also: date-difference-calculator.

Add Business Days to a Date

Add mode answers a different question: what date is N business days after a date? The start date is the anchor and is not counted. The calculator moves forward day by day, skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and your holiday dates, until it has counted the number of business days you entered. For example, Friday 2 October 2026 plus 1 business day is Monday 5 October 2026.

Subtract Business Days from a Date

Subtract mode works backwards and finds the date that is N business days before your start date. The start date is the anchor and is not counted, and weekend days and holiday dates are skipped. For example, Friday 9 October 2026 minus 1 business day is Thursday 8 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are business days?

A business day is any day from Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are not counted as business days.

How are business days calculated?

Count the calendar days between your two dates, remove the Saturdays and Sundays, then remove any holiday dates you entered. This calculator counts both the start date and the end date.

Are weekends included?

No. Saturdays and Sundays are always excluded, so a business day means Monday to Friday.

Are holidays excluded?

Yes, but only the holiday dates you enter yourself. The calculator does not include a country holiday calendar, so add any holidays that apply to you.

Can I add business days to a date?

Yes. Select Add, enter a start date and a number of business days, and the calculator returns the date that falls that many working days later, skipping weekends and your holidays.

Can I subtract business days?

Yes. Select Subtract to find the date that falls that many working days before your start date.

Does this calculator include the start date?

In Between Dates mode, yes - both the start date and the end date are counted. When adding or subtracting business days, the start date is the anchor and is not counted.

Does a holiday on Saturday or Sunday count?

No effect. A holiday date that falls on a Saturday or Sunday changes nothing, because that day is already excluded as a weekend day.

Does the calculator use country-specific holidays?

No. This version uses a Monday to Friday week and only the holiday dates you enter, so results work the same for any country.

Is the calculation done in my browser?

Yes. Calculations are performed in your browser. No account or upload is required.
